How to automatically track workouts on Apple Watch with watchOS 5

WatchOS 5 introduces a new feature that automatically recognizes when you start exercising. This simple function detects when you start a workout and tracks it. This happens automatically, but it still requires your participation. Your workout tracking will not start automatically, you will still need to tap on the notification that appears on the display.

The function is enabled by default, but if you have disabled it for some reason, it can be enabled in Settings -> General -> Workouts. Here you need to click on the radio buttons next to Start Workout Reminder and End Workout Reminder.

At the moment, the function only works with the following types of workouts:

  • Run
  • Walking
