It is expected that this year Apple will present three iPhones at once. At the same time, two of them will be equipped with OLED – displays, while the third will have LCD – a panel, and it will cost $ 700-800. The Taiwanese Commercial Times reported that the LCD model will have an aspect ratio of 18: 9, as opposed to 19.5: 9 for iPhone X. Thanks to this, the new LCD iPhone the bezels will be only 0.5 mm thick on all four sides, which is less than iPhone X.
Back in September 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported that Japan Display would be the display supplier for the budget iPhone 2018. Thus, this new product will receive an advanced LCD panel that can compete with OLED last year.
From the WSJ report:
Japan Display reports that their improved LCD panels are able not only to compete, but also to outperform OLED at a lower cost. In the new Full Active displays, the bezels around the screen can be reduced to 0.5 mm on each side. For comparison, in older LCD displays it was impossible to make frames less than a few millimeters in size.
Minatake Kashio, head of Tokyo-based Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, said that OLED – displays of the current generation have displays at least a millimeter in size.
Japan Display notes that the company is working on Full Active displays that will allow manufacturers to create curved displays that only OLED panels could previously offer.
Note that the displays LCD Full Active used Xiaomi to produce their legendary Mi Mix 2.
